Why it's worth checking out
The Sydney Opera House is a major performing arts destination in Sydney CBD, with a programme that reaches well beyond opera. Its stages host contemporary and classical music, theatre, musical theatre, cabaret, dance, talks and ideas, along with dedicated performances for children and families. The Concert Hall, Joan Sutherland Theatre, Drama Theatre, Studio, Playhouse and Utzon Room each feature across the programme, so a visit can range from a large-scale performance to a more intimate event. Live music is central to the offering, with contemporary artists, orchestras and streamed performances represented alongside the broader calendar.
There is plenty to explore beyond a ticketed show. Guided experiences include the daily Sydney Opera House Tour, language tours, a Mobility Access Tour, Backstage Tour and Architectural Tour. Visitors can also discover exhibitions, installations, free events and seasonal experiences across the building and its surrounding spaces. For those unable to attend in person, the Opera House’s Stream platform offers performances, archive highlights, podcasts, playlists and original content, while its reading and listening collections explore the building’s history and productions.
The setting is a significant part of the experience. The Opera House stands on Tubowgule, a place of ceremony, gathering and celebration in Aboriginal Australia, and the organisation acknowledges the Gadigal, traditional custodians of the land. On site, Midden by Mark Olive presents contemporary Australian cuisine with native ingredients and Indigenous storytelling on the promenade, while Opera Bar offers harbour views, food and daily live entertainment. Bennelong is the venue’s award-winning fine-dining restaurant, and The Lounge provides a place to relax, eat, drink and learn more about the House and its resident companies before selected performances.
Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the building is World Heritage-listed and its distinctive sails have become a symbol of Sydney and modern Australia. Construction began in 1959 and the Opera House opened in 1973, beginning a new era of cultural discovery. It suits visitors looking for a concert, a theatre or dance performance, a guided architectural experience, a meal with a view, or a broader day out. Families can choose from children’s programming, groups can build an evening around a performance and the surrounding restaurants, and solo visitors can attend a show, tour the building or explore its online programme.
