Why it's worth checking out

Parramatta Park is one of Sydney's grandest and most historic green spaces, a vast parkland at the heart of Parramatta in Greater Western Sydney. A UNESCO World Heritage-listed site as part of the Australian Convict Sites — home to the historic Old Government House — it combines sweeping lawns, river frontage, heritage features and walking and cycling paths across an extensive, beautiful setting.

The appeal is that combination of genuine history and expansive open space: room to walk, run, cycle and picnic, the lovely Parramatta River, the heritage of Old Government House, and plenty of room to breathe right by the city centre. It's a much-loved green heart for the surrounding suburbs and a destination in its own right.

With a 4.5 rating from nearly 9,000 reviews, it's a firm favourite. The park is free and open year-round, but Old Government House, facilities and any events have their own arrangements, so it's worth checking details before a special visit — though for a walk, a ride, a picnic or to take in the historic surrounds, you can generally just turn up and enjoy one of Sydney's great parklands.
