Why it's worth checking out
Observatory Hill Park is a central Sydney green space with wide views across Sydney Harbour and a strong connection to the city’s history. Located in Millers Point, it is home to the Sydney Observatory, described by the City of Sydney as Australia’s first observatory. Built between 1857 and 1859, the observatory remains open to the public and is the landmark that gave the hill its name.
The park offers space to pause above the city, with outdoor fitness equipment for exercise and a designated off-leash area for dogs. Public toilets are available a short walk away on Watson Road, near the Argyle Street entrance. The rotunda is also listed as an outdoor space available for hire, making the park relevant for organised gatherings as well as casual visits.
Its setting carries layers of Sydney’s early colonial and maritime history. The first windmill on the hill was built in 1796 by Irish convict John Davis, and later windmills helped give the surrounding district its name, Millers Point. Fort Phillip was constructed on the high ground in 1800, while the site later served as a signal station communicating with ships through flags and semaphore. The names Upper Fort Street and Flagstaff Hill reflect these earlier uses.
The park suits visitors who want harbour outlooks, a historic setting or a convenient place for outdoor activity in the Sydney CBD. It is a practical stop for walkers, solo visitors, dog owners and groups using the rotunda, and it is close to Wynyard train station, The Rocks and Circular Quay. The park is bounded by Kent Street, Watson Road, Upper Fort Street and Bradfield Highway, placing it within easy reach of several city landmarks.
