Why it's worth checking out
Trumper Park is a substantial green space in Paddington, Sydney, combining a sports oval with walking routes, a playground and areas of regenerated bushland. The park is named after Victor Trumper, one of Paddington’s cricketing heroes, and remains strongly connected to the sport: visitors will find a grass cricket pitch and practice nets, while the oval is also used for Australian Rules football. Sports lighting allows some activity at night, and a turf athletics track runs around the oval. Rugby and tennis facilities are also listed, with a tennis centre next to the park.
Away from the playing fields, walking trails link the park with surrounding streets. Recent pathway works added a sandstone path along the park’s upper edge, a concrete footpath at the Harris Street end, upgraded stairs and bypass ramps. These improvements are intended to make the routes more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, prams, mobility scooters and walking frames. There is also a new picnic setting near Quarry Street, along with park benches, shade areas and a grandstand overlooking the sporting facilities.
Families have a dedicated reason to visit, with a playground divided into several sections. It includes an adventure combination unit with slides, swings and a sand-based area for younger children. Public toilets, change rooms, a canteen and an accessible toilet under the grandstand are provided. The Paddington Community Garden is located off Quarry Street, adding another community-focused feature to the upper end of the park.
Trumper Park suits a range of visits, from a children’s play session or a walk through the connected paths to watching local sport or using the grounds for organised activity. Dogs are allowed on leash throughout the park, but not on the Trumper Oval playing surface. Parking is available via time-limited street spaces near the lower end of the park, nearby Edgecliff Centre parking, and approximately 60 untimed spaces on Quarry Street near the tennis centre. The site began life as Hampden Park Oval on reclaimed swamp, with Glenmore Brook running beneath its middle, before being renamed in 1931 in honour of Victor Trumper.
