Why it's worth checking out
Sydney Park is a substantial green space in Alexandria, with enough variety to suit a short visit or a full day outdoors. The multi-award-winning regional park includes rolling hills, wetlands, a sports oval, large playground, children’s cycling track, skate park and outdoor fitness areas. There are also picnic and barbecue areas, shaded seating, public toilets, four car parks and a cafe kiosk at the village green.
Families are well catered for, particularly around the extensive playground and award-winning children’s bike track. The track has a shaded learn-to-ride area and supports bike clinics and courses, with twists, turns and challenges designed to build safe riding skills. For older children and adults, the skate park has areas for skating, scooting and BMX riding, including a beginner bowl, plaza features and a 3-metre-deep flow bowl. It is wheelchair accessible and lit until 9pm.
Dog owners will find extensive off-leash areas available at all times, including a paddling pool and dog water station. Dogs are not permitted in the wetlands, Alan Davidson Oval, Sydney Park Cycling Centre, playground or barbecue areas. The wetlands are a key part of the park’s character, supporting visiting and resident birdlife, frogs and eastern long-necked turtles. Birdwatchers may see species including black swans, Latham’s snipe, black-winged stilts and superb fairy-wrens.
The park also has a strong industrial and environmental history. Its former clay pits supported brick, pottery and tile works, including the Bedford Brickworks and Austral Brick Company, before parts of the site were used as a local tip. Today, stormwater is captured, treated and reused to maintain the wetlands, irrigate the 44-hectare park and supply a neighbouring depot. Visitors can also see public artworks and memorials, including The Trail, Water Falls and the SPAIDs memorial. With sports facilities, open areas, wildlife habitat and dedicated play spaces, Sydney Park works for families, solo walkers, dog owners and active groups.
