Why it's worth checking out
Sydney Harbour National Park brings together islands and foreshore areas around one of the city’s most recognisable natural landmarks. From Manly and the harbour’s northern reaches, the park offers a broad mix of coastal scenery, bushland and water-based experiences, with lookouts opening across the harbour and its long, varied coastline.
There is plenty to do beyond sightseeing. Visitors can choose from swimming spots including Cobblers Beach, Lady Bay Beach and Reef Beach, or set out on walks such as the Manly scenic walkway, the Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay walk, the Hermitage Foreshore track and the South Head Heritage trail. Picnic areas at Nielsen Park, Clark Island, Shark Island and other locations make it practical for a relaxed day outdoors, while guided walking tours, kayak experiences and other tours provide more structured ways to explore.
The park’s character comes from the overlap of natural and cultural history. Rare pockets of bushland support native wildlife, while the landscape also contains Aboriginal sites, convict-built buildings, military fortifications and a heritage lighthouse. Highlights include Hornby Lighthouse, Grotto Point Aboriginal engraving site, Georges Head, North Head, Middle Head and the Arabanoo lookout at Dobroyd Head. Lookouts can also be a worthwhile place to watch for whales during their annual winter migration north.
With its combination of beaches, tracks, picnic areas, lookouts and heritage sites, the park can suit different styles of visit: a family outing built around swimming and lunch, a group day of walking and history, or a solo wander along the foreshore. Some areas are on islands and may involve landing or tour fees, while access and conditions can vary across the park. Sydney Harbour National Park is open from sunrise to sunset, although closures may occur during poor weather or periods of fire danger, so checking current alerts before setting out is sensible.
