Why it's worth checking out

Set in the historic National Trust Centre on Observatory Hill, the S.H. Ervin Gallery is a public art gallery focused on the richness and diversity of Australian art. Its program spans historical and contemporary work, presenting exhibitions in fresh contexts and supporting research into artists from across Australian art history. The gallery is also recognised for exhibitions and programs that highlight the contribution of Australian women artists.

The exhibition program changes throughout the year and has included major travelling exhibitions and surveys of artists such as Clarice Beckett, Albert Tucker, Violet Teague, Kathleen O’Connor, Margo Lewers, Jean Bellette, William Robinson, Cressida Campbell, Nicholas Harding, Euan Macleod and Wendy Sharpe. Its annual presentations include the Salon des Refusés, an alternative exhibition connected with the Archibald and Wynne Prize, and the Portia Geach Memorial Award for women artists. These recurring shows give returning visitors a reason to keep an eye on the program, while the broader exhibition schedule offers different entry points into Australian art.

The gallery occupies a building with a substantial history. The 1856 structure was attributed to Henry Robertson and originally formed part of Fort Street School, later Fort Street Girls’ High School. The wider National Trust Centre includes buildings that have also served as a military hospital and school. The S.H. Ervin Gallery opened in 1978 after philanthropist and collector Samuel Henry Ervin’s bequest helped establish a public gallery committed to Australian art. That connection between the collection, the building and the gallery’s research focus gives a visit more context than a standalone exhibition space.

Located on Observatory Hill in The Rocks, Sydney, the gallery is a considered stop for visitors interested in Australian artists, exhibition history and heritage buildings. It can work for a solo visit, a small group outing or anyone exploring the galleries and historic sites around Sydney CBD. The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm, closed on Mondays, public holidays and during exhibition changeover. Admission is $15 for general visitors and $12 for seniors and concession holders; National Trust members enter free, as do children under five. Access is via Argyle Street.
