Why it's worth checking out
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is a major destination for Australian and international art in Sydney CBD, with free general entry and a programme of exhibitions, events, tours and experiences. Its collection and displays sit across two buildings connected by a public art garden, making the visit feel more like exploring a cultural campus than a single gallery. The historic Naala Nura faces the Domain parklands, while newer building Naala Badu overlooks Sydney Harbour.
There is plenty here for different kinds of visits. Solo visitors can take their time with the collection, while couples and friends can combine the galleries with a meal or drink. Families have access to the library and children’s art library, and the museum’s education and tour programmes provide more structured ways to engage with the art. Wednesday’s Art After Hours adds a later option, with free films, pop-up bars and exhibition ticket offers.
The gallery’s food and drink options make it easy to extend a visit. In Naala Nura, the Art Gallery Restaurant, Crafted by Matt Moran, offers all-day dining in a striking dining room, with a seasonal, Mediterranean-influenced approach shaped around locally sourced produce and Australian meat and seafood. The Gallery Cafe is a more casual, light-filled stop for all-day fare, coffee and drinks. Across in Naala Badu, MOD Dining serves Asian cuisine throughout the day, while the outdoor kiosk focuses on seasonal takeaway food and beverages featuring native Australian ingredients and connections to Indigenous culture.
The venue also has a strong sense of place and purpose. The gallery acknowledges the Gadigal, the traditional custodians of the Country on which it stands, and its building names, Naala Badu and Naala Nura, were adopted in 2024 from Aboriginal language. The institution describes itself as a centre for collecting, preserving, interpreting and displaying art, as well as a forum for education and the exchange of ideas. For visitors wanting more than a quick gallery circuit, the combination of major art, considered architecture, public space and on-site dining makes it well suited to a half-day outing in Sydney.
