Rushcutters Bay Park

Rushcutters Bay Park is a harbourside open space on New South Head Road in Sydney, with a foreshore walk linking it to Yarranabbe Park. It suits a range of everyday visits, from a picnic on a sunny day to a casual stop near the playground. A kiosk is listed among the park facilities, along with benches, shade areas, public toilets and a drinking fountain.

Families have access to a fully fenced playground with swings, slides, climbing equipment and monkey bars. The park also includes two sportsfields for rugby union and soccer, as well as a synthetic junior cricket pitch, so the setting can be active and lively when organised sport is taking place. For individual exercise, there is an outdoor fitness station, while accessible facilities include an accessible toilet and baby change table.

The park is also practical for dog owners: dogs may be off leash between 3:30pm and 10:30am, except during organised sports, and must be on leash at other times. Time-limited street parking is available on surrounding streets. Visitors planning to use a sportsground or hire the space should check availability and the council’s current ground status before visiting, particularly after wet weather.

There is some local history behind the name. The area was first known as Blackburn Cove, then became known as Rushcutting Bay because convicts cut reeds there for roof thatching in the early colony. A heritage-listed stormwater channel divides the park between Woollahra Council and the City of Sydney. The surrounding Rushcutters Bay area is also associated with the former Sydney Stadium, where The Beatles performed six concerts in June 1964. With its sports facilities, playground, walking connection and open picnic setting, the park is well suited to families, recreational users, dog walkers and solo visitors wanting time outdoors.
