Why it's worth checking out
Naala Badu is the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ newer building on the north side of its Sydney campus, overlooking Sydney Harbour. Its name comes from a Sydney Aboriginal language and means “seeing waters”. Together with the historic Naala Nura building, it forms a two-building art museum campus connected by a public art garden in the Domain on Gadigal Country. General entry to the Art Gallery is free, while some exhibitions require a ticket.
The gallery presents Australian and international art through changing exhibitions, collection displays and public programmes. The building’s spaces have featured works including Lisa Reihana’s GROUNDLOOP and Betty Kuntiwa Pumani’s Antara, while the wider campus includes the Yiribana Gallery, the Grand Courts, a library and children’s art library, the National Art Archive and a Gallery Shop. Visitors can also use the gallery’s audio guide with their own device, making it easy to explore at an individual pace.
Naala Badu also has several options for eating and drinking. MOD Dining, on lower level 1, serves Asian cuisine in a casual all-day setting, with mid-morning snacks, small and large plates, desserts, cocktails and an Australian wine list. The Welcome Plaza kiosk offers takeaway food and drinks built around native Australian ingredients and Indigenous culture. Visitors can also access the Art Gallery’s café and restaurant in Naala Nura, including Crafted by Matt Moran, a seasonal, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant focused on local produce and Australian meat and seafood.
The venue suits visitors building a broader day around art rather than making a short gallery stop. Solo visitors can take their time with the exhibitions and collection, while groups can combine a visit with dining, the shop or a programme. Families have access to the children’s art library and family-focused gallery resources, and the Domain setting provides a change of pace from the city centre. Naala Badu is about a 15-minute walk from central Sydney, making it a practical cultural stop for locals and visitors exploring the CBD, the Domain and Sydney Harbour.
