Why it's worth checking out
Malabar Beach is a relatively quiet coastal spot in Sydney, known locally for its generally calm conditions and practical facilities. It is described as one of Randwick City’s lesser-known beaches, with a rock pool on the southern foreshore below Randwick Golf Club and a boat ramp on the northern side of the bay. The northern end is also home to the Randwick District Offshore Rescue Boat.
There is plenty to do beyond a beach visit. Walking, jogging, sunbathing, snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking and rock fishing are all popular here, while two shipwrecks in the bay—the MV Malabar and the Goolgwai—are noted attractions for divers. Cromwell Park sits directly behind the beach, with a children’s playground, public toilets, showers and changerooms, making the area a practical choice for families and groups spending several hours by the water.
Accessibility is a significant feature. Malabar Beach has permanent wheelchair access, with up to 60 metres of specially designed recycled-plastic matting available on request to make it easier for wheelchair users, older visitors and parents with prams to reach the hard sand. The nearby Ocean Pool is fully wheelchair accessible, although the matting does not provide access into the water. Beach wheelchair hire is also available through Randwick City Council, subject to availability and conditions on the day.
The beach is currently listed as unpatrolled, so visitors should take care around the water and check conditions before swimming. Council also advises avoiding the water during heavy rain and for 24 hours afterwards because stormwater runoff may affect water quality. Dogs, alcohol, glass bottles, camping, fires and smoking or vaping are not permitted on the beach, and the area has a permanent alcohol ban. With its sheltered setting, accessible facilities, playground and mix of land- and water-based activities, Malabar Beach suits families, casual walkers, divers and visitors looking for a less prominent coastal outing.
