Why it's worth checking out

Hallstrom Park is a family-focused recreation space in Chatswood, Sydney, centred on a large adventure playground with an imaginative animal theme. The design draws on the layout of Taronga Park Zoo, reflecting the connection to Sir Edward Hallstrom, who chaired the zoo trust for 10 years and helped fund improvements to the land in 1946.

The playground, built in 1998 and upgraded in 2016, includes sandstone animal carvings, sound-activated features, an interactive musicosaurus and detailed forged-metal elements. Children can explore a mound slide, wide embankment slide, sandpit with water pump, carousel, turtle dome climber, swings, basket swing and a bike track. A stone crocodile hidden among the rocks in the drainage channel adds another detail to discover.

A continuous accessible path with a flat to gently undulating surface connects the playground equipment, including the step-free mound slide. The park also provides a shelter, benches, picnic tables, BBQ facilities, toilets and accessible amenities. Parking is available on Small Street, including two reserved accessible spaces, with additional off-street parking near the Willoughby Leisure Centre and netball courts. With its varied play equipment and accessible layout, Hallstrom Park is best suited to families looking for an outdoor stop where children can move, climb and investigate at their own pace.
