Freshwater Beach

Freshwater Beach is a well-rounded Northern Beaches destination for swimming, surfing and an easy family day by the water. Northern Beaches Council describes it as a family-friendly beach with good swimming conditions, while the southern end is noted for bodyboarding. The beach forms part of the Manly-Freshwater National and World Surfing Reserve, recognising the area’s surfing history as well as its cultural and environmental importance.

There are options for different levels of surfing experience. Waves are generally described in the one-to-two-metre range, with the middle-to-northern section considered suitable for less experienced surfers. More confident surfers can try the southern end when the swell is favourable. On summer days, the beach can become busy with families and people learning to surf, giving it an active, social feel rather than a secluded one.

Families are catered for with an accessible playground at the southern end, and a beach wheelchair is available to borrow through the lifeguards on duty. Bus access is available via Transport for NSW, while parking includes paid options for visitors without a Northern Beaches Council parking permit and designated accessible spaces. The council page currently lists the beach as open, but notes that it is not patrolled by lifeguards at this time of year, so visitors should check conditions and take appropriate care.
