Why it's worth checking out
Ferndale Park is a 10.1-hectare remnant bushland reserve in Chatswood, forming a long, narrow green corridor among residential properties. Swaines Creek runs through its centre, with the surrounding waterways eventually flowing into the Lane Cove River. The reserve also helps connect smaller bushland areas with Mowbray Park, Blue Gum Park and Lane Cove National Park.
Sign-posted tracks provide access through the bushland, including the Ferndale Walking Track, which forms part of the broader Rail to River walk. Park benches and picnic tables are available, making it a practical stop for a quiet walk or a short rest. The reserve’s natural setting is the main attraction rather than a manicured recreation area.
Ferndale Park is also valuable habitat for local wildlife. The area supports a wide range of forest and woodland birds, while the Powerful Owl is known to roost and nest in the park. Four species of microbat, as well as echidnas, bandicoots and antechinus, are also recorded here. Its bushland history reflects the region’s earlier timber-getting, farming and orchard activities.
Dogs are permitted off leash only on the grassed area beside Dalrymple Avenue. Within the bushland, dogs may be walked on a leash using the formal tracks, and off-leash walking is not allowed. The park suits solo walkers, birdwatchers and visitors looking for a nature-focused break in suburban Sydney.
