Why it's worth checking out

Dunningham Reserve occupies the northern headland of Coogee Beach, with broad ocean and coastline views across the water. The outlook has made it a popular setting for photographers and filmmakers, while the reserve’s open grassed areas and coastal position attract people using the space for recreation. The Eastern Beaches Coastal Walk follows the reserve’s coastal edge, making it a useful stop for walkers and joggers exploring the shoreline.

There is room here for a simple outdoor visit, with picnic shelters and tables, park seats, drinking fountains, native trees and shrubs, lighting, toilets and a playground. Families can make use of the play space and grassed areas, while solo visitors and walking groups may prefer the coastal path and lookout points. Dogs are required to remain on leash. A temporary toilet block operates in summer, according to the council listing.

Dunningham Reserve is also a place of remembrance. The former Giles Gym and baths stood here from 1928 and became a well-known fitness and hot-baths venue under Oscar Giles. The buildings were demolished in 2000 after deteriorating, but the sandstone entry portico remains as a memorial and now marks an important entry point to the reserve. The former site was later named Dolphin Point in memory of six Coogee Dolphins Football Club members who died in the Bali bombings in 2002.

At Dolphin Point, a bronze sculpture by Sasha Reid represents family, friends and community through three linked figures. Nearby plaques record the significance of the memorial and list the names of 20 victims from Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Randwick City Council holds a remembrance ceremony at the site each October. Visitors should note that a permanent alcohol ban applies, and camping, fires, golf practice and the removal of flora and fauna are prohibited. Commercial use also attracts fees and charges.
