Why it's worth checking out
Bales Park is a 2.1-hectare park, playground and sportsground in Chatswood, with access from Stanley Street, Ranelagh Crescent and Sydney Street. It offers a mix of open recreational space and facilities including a bocce court, BBQ, picnic tables, benches, bubbler, toilets and parking.
The fenced playground is the main family feature, with a dual embankment slide, train, swings, spinner, climbing frame and trike track. One swing is designed to be used with arm movements only. A continuous accessible loop connects the playground equipment with the BBQ, picnic settings and seating, and there is one accessible car space in the Sydney Street car park.
The park has a local history dating back to its earlier use as Chinese market gardens. It was created through resumption and private purchase in 1930, when it was known as Central Park, and was later expanded. An off-leash area is available from one hour before sunset until one hour after sunrise, but dogs are not permitted in the children's play area. Sportsgrounds may close during or after wet weather, so visitors should check conditions before heading out.
