Why it's worth checking out
The Golden Sheaf is a long-established heritage pub in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, with a food-and-drink offering that stretches well beyond a standard bar. Its kitchen serves relaxed pub dining, including burgers, schnitzels, prawn linguine, fresh pasta and premium steaks with sides. The menu is suited to easy lunches, dinners and group meals, while the venue also promotes a Sunday roast and a kids-eat-free offer on Sundays with the purchase of a main meal.
The multi-level venue gives visitors several ways to spend time there. The Garden Bar sits beneath a large, fairy-lit fig tree, while the bistro provides a dedicated dining space. There are five bars, a rooftop cocktail setting, a Public Bar with pool, a gaming room and screens for live sport. The atmosphere shifts across the day and night, from a more relaxed garden or meal to live music, DJs and late-night activity. Bands, covers groups, acoustic performers and DJs feature across the weekly programme, with themed nights and midweek entertainment also part of the calendar.
The venue’s story is closely tied to Double Bay. The current Art Deco building opened in 1936 and is heritage-listed, making it one of the better-known surviving interwar pubs in Sydney’s east. The site previously held the Double Bay Grounds, a tennis venue that hosted major matches including the Australasian Championships in 1919. Inside, an entrance gallery displays rock memorabilia, reflecting the pub’s long connection with live music. Its outdoor beer garden was already drawing attention in the 1940s, and the fig tree remains a defining feature of the grounds.
The Golden Sheaf caters to a broad mix of visitors without limiting itself to one type of occasion. Families can make use of the Sunday kids’ offer, groups can book tables or private functions through the events team, and sports fans have dedicated spaces and screens. It can also work for a casual meal, a drink under the tree, live music or a later night out. Dog owners are catered for too, with the venue stating that dogs are welcome.
