Why it's worth checking out
The Calyx is a distinctive public exhibition space within the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, bringing architecture, horticulture and changing displays together in the heart of Sydney. Its defining feature is one of the largest green walls in the southern hemisphere, creating a lush indoor setting that feels notably different from a conventional gallery or event venue. Seasonal horticultural displays add another reason to return, with the experience changing as new exhibitions are presented.
The Calyx also sits within a broader garden experience. Visitors can explore the surrounding Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, browse The Calyx shop for plants and sustainability-focused gifts, or stop at Leaf Dept. Cafe, which is located at The Calyx. The venue’s position in the Garden makes it a useful place to combine an exhibition visit with time outdoors, rather than treating it as a standalone indoor attraction.
A significant part of the site’s current cultural offering is Cadi Jam Ora – Renewed Gadigal Story Journey, a First Nations story journey in Wuganmagulya, the First Nations precinct of the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Developed through deep listening, learning and truth-telling with First Nations people, it shares revitalised stories of the Gadigal people and explores relationships between plants, people and place. The journey includes an Australian Rainforest Garden, the Yer’ung – Spirit Tree artwork and an Australian Native Rockery, with an emphasis on the plants and cultural knowledge of Gadigal Country.
The Calyx is also available for private hire, including wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate functions, conferences, product or media launches, seated meals and team-building events. Its spaces can accommodate up to 200 people seated or 400 for a cocktail-style event, with the flexibility to suit both smaller gatherings and larger functions. That makes it relevant to event organisers as well as day visitors, while the public exhibitions and garden setting offer a calm, visually rich stop for solo visitors, couples and groups exploring the Sydney CBD.
