Why it's worth checking out

Q Station Manly is a place to stay, explore and learn within a 33-hectare former quarantine station at North Head, in Sydney Harbour National Park. The site combines heritage hotel accommodation with dining, guided tours, conference facilities, wedding and event spaces, water activities and access to the harbour and surrounding bushland. It is about 30 minutes from Sydney CBD, and guests can travel between Manly Wharf and Q Station on the complimentary shuttle bus. Vehicle access around the site is limited, helping preserve its historic and natural setting.

The accommodation occupies original quarantine buildings where migrants arriving in Australia were once housed. Rooms are arranged around the former first-, second- and third-class divisions, while old staff quarters have been adapted into cottage accommodation for small groups or families. The buildings retain features including high ceilings, heavy window panes and their distinctive yellow paintwork. Rooms do not have air conditioning because of heritage restrictions, but they have ceiling fans and heating for cooler weather. Harbour, National Park and historic-building views are available, giving the stay a strong sense of place rather than a conventional hotel feel.

There is plenty to do beyond an overnight stay. Guided history tours explore the Quarantine Station’s more than 150-year story, while after-dark tours lead visitors through historic buildings, the burial ground and quiet pathways after sunset. The Museum and Visitor Centre handles tour bookings, water-sports hire and site-wide activities. At Quarantine Beach, visitors can swim, snorkel, kayak or paddleboard, hire equipment and spend time beside the harbour. North Head Sanctuary is also a short walk away, with trails, wildlife, historic landmarks and harbour views. The newer Harbour Heat sauna adds a contemporary wellness experience connected to the headland’s long association with heat and healing.

Dining is centred on Boilerhouse Kitchen & Bar, a restaurant in the historic boiler house with an open kitchen, harbour views and modern Australian cooking. Q Station also caters for corporate gatherings, celebrations and weddings, with on-site catering options and a dedicated events team. Its mix of educational programs, outdoor activities, family-friendly cottage stays, history experiences and secluded accommodation makes it suitable for school groups, families, event groups and independent travellers. Visitors should be prepared for inclines, steps and uneven ground, and note that lighting is limited at night in parts of the park. The setting is shaped by both conservation and history: Q Station was Australia’s longest continuously operating quarantine station from 1832 until its closure in 1984, and its heritage buildings and surrounding landscape remain protected as part of Sydney Harbour National Park.
