Why it's worth checking out

Giles Baths is a natural rock pool at the foot of Coogee’s northern headland, offering a different experience from the open beach. Known locally as the “Bogey hole”, it is a popular swimming spot and a place to explore along the rocky edge of Coogee Beach. Its setting makes it a natural stop for swimmers, coastal walkers and young people looking for a change of scene by the water.

The baths can be reached from the Coastal Walkway through Dunningham Reserve, near the Bali Memorial, or by following the rocky foreshore north from Coogee Beach. The remaining entry portico from the former Giles Gym and Baths adds a visible link to the site’s past. In the nineteenth century, the pool was used by male bathers, and the council describes it as an institution with a longer local history that is still being explored through Randwick City Library’s Our Story platform.

Conditions are an important part of visiting. The pool may become rough when the surf is strong, and lifeguards regularly respond to minor injuries such as bumps, cuts and bruises. Visitors should also note the site rules: smoking and vaping, alcohol, dogs, fires, glass and spear fishing are prohibited. Located at 105–109R Beach Street in Coogee, Giles Baths suits those seeking a rugged ocean-side swim or a short coastal outing, rather than a conventional gym or managed leisure centre.
