Why it's worth checking out

Cape Solander is a coastal lookout in the Kurnell section of Kamay Botany Bay National Park, close to Cronulla in Sydney. Its main draw is the ocean outlook: a dedicated viewing platform sits above the sandstone cliffs and provides a strong vantage point for whale watching, particularly during the humpback migration. Whales may be seen from May to October, with June and July identified as the best months, and some have been spotted as close as 200 metres from shore.

The lookout also works well as a starting point for exploring the park. Visitors can set out on a coastal walk, watch for native birds, or simply take in the open horizon and surrounding sandstone landscape. The area has information about whales seen in Sydney waters, while a nearby guided Cape Solander Walk offers a two-hour experience focused on the cliffs, wildflowers and wildlife. The Cape Baily walking track, lighthouse and Muru and Yena tracks provide further options in the Kurnell area.

There is a clear local and historical thread to the site. Cape Solander is named after botanist Daniel Solander, and visitors can learn more about the importance of whales in local Aboriginal culture through a State Library video interview with Wallangang Elder Glen Timbery. A Travelling Barista food truck is also listed at Cape Solander and Commemoration Flat picnic area, although availability may vary.

Cape Solander suits solo visitors and small groups looking for an easy-access nature stop, as well as families who can keep children close to the marked tracks. The cliffs are unfenced, with overhanging sections that may be unstable, so staying away from the edges and supervising children is essential. Bring drinking water, a hat, sunscreen and sturdy shoes. There are no toilets at the lookout; the nearest are 2 km away at Commemoration Flat car park. Check current alerts before visiting, as parts of the Kurnell area are subject to infrastructure works and parking changes during 2025–2026.
